The Irish Wolfhounds Men’s Development Squad announced themselves in style by claiming the Cork Bowl title, producing a dominant display throughout the tournament and underlining the exciting future of the national programme.
Making their competitive debut as a squad, expectations were high for the newly assembled group, and they delivered emphatically. Across five games, the Development Squad combined disciplined defence with explosive offence, finishing the day unbeaten while scoring an incredible 334 points and conceding just 61.
The group stage set the tone for the tournament, with comprehensive victories over every opponent. The Wolfhounds opened with an 86–12 win over the Dublin City Wolves before defeating the Cork City Outlaws 66–18. They completed the preliminary rounds with another commanding performance, overcoming the West Dublin Rhinos 65–6 to finish top of the group.
Their momentum carried into the knockout stages. The semi-final saw another dominant display against the Dublin City Wolves, running out convincing 63–13 winners. That performance earned a place in the championship game, where they once again met the Cork City Outlaws. The final proved to be another showcase of the squad’s quality as they secured the Cork Bowl title with an impressive 54–12 victory.
While the results highlighted the team’s attacking firepower, conceding just 61 points across five matches also demonstrated the squad’s defensive discipline and ability to consistently control games.
The tournament also marked an important milestone for five players, with Ben Arulogun, Conor McKernan, Darragh McDonnell, Patrick Gordon, and Zac McDowell all earning their first appearances for the Men’s Development Squad. Their performances reflected the depth of emerging talent within the Irish Wolfhounds pathway and reinforced the programme’s commitment to developing players capable of competing at the highest level.
Head Coach Jo Buchanan was pleased with the squad’s first competitive outing while acknowledging there is still plenty of room for growth.
“A very pleasing first outing for our Development Squad, which featured five debutants. Plenty to work on going forward, but the potential in this group is clear to see. Our focus now shifts to our next major milestone event – Flagapalooza in August.”
The Cork Bowl victory provides an excellent platform as the Development Squad continues to build experience together. With a blend of emerging talent, strong team chemistry, and a commitment to continual improvement, the squad now turns its attention to Flagapalooza, where they will look to build on an outstanding opening chapter in their journey.
